Survey settings

When nothing is selected in the form editor, the properties panel shows the settings of the survey itself, in five groups. To get there, click an empty spot in the preview, outside the questions.

Identity

  • cover is the picture shown at the top of your survey and on its card. Pick something from the place you are mapping, not a logo.

The name and the description are not in this group. You edit them straight in the preview, as described in Building your form.

Schedule

  • start date and end date are the days your survey accepts answers.

Both can be left empty. An empty start date means the survey is open as soon as it’s public, and an empty end date means it stays open until you close it yourself. Set an end date for a survey tied to an event, so it stops collecting answers when the event is over instead of when you remember it.

Map

  • use a map ties the survey to a map. Turn it off for a survey that collects answers without placing them anywhere.
  • map is the map that receives the answers. You can pick any map of the team that owns the survey.
  • default icons are the icons an answer starts with. They decide which questions a contributor sees about the place, because the questions of an icon come with it.

Changing the map changes the icons your survey can offer, since those come from the map’s icon sets. If you switch maps after you have set up your icons question, check it again.

Answers

  • answer mode decides how much one contribution covers:
    • one-feature is one answer, one place. It’s the usual choice.
    • many-features lets one contributor answer about several places at once. The form lists the places of the maps you pick in the group rules, and the contributor answers the repeatable questions for each of them. It’s the mode for checking on places you mapped already, like the condition of every bench in a park.
  • group rules choose the maps whose places the form lists. They are used only in the many-features mode.
  • repeatable questions are the questions asked about each of those places. They are used only in the many-features mode.
  • feature name prefix is put in front of the name of every place that comes from this survey, so you can tell at a glance where a site came from.
  • registration mandatory asks contributors to sign in before they answer. It cuts down on nonsense, and it costs you the people who won’t make an account. Leave it off unless you have a reason.
  • notifications sends an email to your team when an answer arrives. When it’s on, the heading of the editor gets an envelope button that opens the article the email is written in.

The notifications switch is applied when you press save, like everything else in the editor. Turn it on, wander off without saving, and the only thing that gets notified is nobody.

Visibility

  • is public lets people outside your team see the survey and answer it. Keep it off while you are still writing your questions.
  • team is the team that owns the survey. The team’s members review the answers, and the maps you can pick are the maps of this team.

Moving a survey to another team changes which maps it can use. If the map of the survey belongs to the old team, set the map again after the move.
