Translating icons
If your map is used by people who speak different languages, you can translate the names, descriptions and categories of your icons, and the questions they ask. This way, everyone sees your icons in their own language.
To translate an icon:
- Open the icon editor.
- Select the icon that you want to translate. If you select several icons, only the one you clicked last is translated.
- Pick the Translate tool from the toolbar at the bottom.
- Fill in the translations and press the save button of each group.
![]()
The properties panel shows a group for each text that can be translated, with a field for every language:
- name is the name of the icon.
- description is the description of the icon.
- category and subcategory are the groups of the icon.
- attribute names are the questions of the icon’s attributes.
- attribute help are the help messages of the attributes.
- attribute options are the answers people can pick from. They are shown only for attributes with options. Keep the same number of options, in the same order as the original ones, separated by commas.
The languages shown are the ones set up on the platform. If a language that you need is missing, contact your platform administrator.
Categories and subcategories are shared by many icons. When you translate one, the translation is applied to every icon of the set with the same category or subcategory, so your legend never ends up half translated.
Your translations won’t be saved until you press the save button! Skip it, and your translations become the Esperanto of your map: a lot of effort, and nobody will ever read them.
